International Executive Workshop with ETIENNE WENGER, GEORGE PÓR & EVE MITLETON-KELLY on 4 & 5 May 2004 at the London School of Economics

If you are a business executive or a leader in the public sector, responsible for change, innovation or knowledge management, or a professional who leads/facilitates communities of practice, then you will be aware that the strategic value of communities needs to be acknowledged and appreciated if they are to grow and evolve.

To do so, the value of community-enabled strategic results has to be proved, without sacrificing the grassroots, self-organising nature of your communities. How can this be done? What makes communities hotbeds of innovation and co-creation, and how can their energy be aligned with the strategic intent of the organisation? This International Executive Workshop is a collaborative learning journey to discover some of the answers and to share your questions and experiences with your peers in other organisations. It will be designed as a deep learning conversation among the participants, interspersed by expert presentations and supported by:

Etienne Wenger is a globally recognized thought leader in the field of learning theory and its application to business. He is a pioneer of the “communities of practice” research, and many consider him the father of this rapidly growing field. With his usual modesty, he deflects it by saying, it is enough to be a proud father of his three gorgeous kids. Etienne is the author of “Communities of Practice: Learning, Meaning and Identity” co-author of “Cultivating Communities of Practice,” and the founder of CPsquare, an international community of community of practice leaders and facilitators.

George Pór is an executive mentor and facilitator of the emergence of collective intelligence in organisations. He has been designing virtual communities in business, for more than 20 years. After working at INSEAD as Senior Research Fellow, he founded CommunityIntelligence Ltd and joined LSE as Visiting Researcher. He is the author of Liberating the Innovation Value of Communities of Practice in the forthcoming textbook on “Knowledge Economics: Emerging Principles, Practices and Policies”, and the Quest for Collective Intelligence in “Community Building: Renewing Spirit and Learning in Business.”

Prof. Eve Mitleton-Kelly will be facilitating a dialogue in which participants can experience how complexity principles work in the emergence of new meaning from the interactions of autonomous players. She is founder and Director of the Complexity Research Programme at the LSE and Advisor to European and USA organisations. She has developed a theory of complex social systems and an integrated methodology. Her recent publications include: Ten Principles of Complexity & Enabling Infrastructures in “Complex Systems & Evolutionary Perspectives of Organisations”.

Participating organisations will have a chance to accelerate their learning together to reach community-enabled strategic results, by forming an ongoing, cross-organisational learning alliance hosted at LSE.

Fee: £745 per participant for the two days or £675 if there are two or more participants from the same organisation, registering at the same time. Group size is limited and registrations will be accepted on first come, first served basis.
